Rango
.
A second trailer for ‘Rango’ shows that Gore Verbinski’s (Pirates of the Caribbean) animated feature will feature a story inspired by the Old West film genre. Johnny Depp stars as Rango.
One of the more unusual animated films coming out next year is undoubtedly Paramount’s Rango, which re-teams of Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski with his “Captain Jack Sparrow,” Johnny Depp.
Today Paramount has released a new Rango trailer – one that gives us a detailed look at the unique characters and Old West-meets-animation hybrid that may just make for one of the most unexpectedly entertaining CGI animated features of recent years.
The first Rango trailer was a bit of a mystery, simply showing the titular character voiced by Depp (a Chameleon) fleeing for his life across the desert to escape being eaten by a hawk. That trailer was more about introducing the character design and geographical aesthetic of the film, while also highlighting Verbinski’s unique vision and Depp’s…er, animated performance, which utilizes the technical wizardry of Industrial Light and Magic to bring the character of Rango to life.
As stated, this new trailer cleverly picks up where the first one left off, showing how that chase through the desert catalyzes the film’s Old West story. In fact, what we see in this latest trailer makes that True Grit/Rango mashup video look all the more relevant.
Check out the second trailer for Rango below:
If you couldn’t pick it up from the trailer, Rango also features the voicework of Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Timothy Olyphant, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ray Winstone. The character design in this film looks truly unique and excellent, and even though the story seems like your classic (cliched?) Old Western tale of law vs. lawlessness, we’ve never really seen that cinematic archetype adapted into an animated feature (I guess you could cite An American Tail: Feivel Goes West, but why would you?). If anything, Rango should offer something fresh and unique – especially in terms of the desert animals that will be featured in it.
Rango will be in theaters on March 4, 2011.
