The full-length trailer for ‘Zookeeper’ features everything you would expect from a family-friendly Kevin James comedy about talking animals in a zoo.
The obvious joke to make about this summer’s comedy Zookeeper is that it was originally titled Paul Blart 2: Zoo Employee -- and, frankly, that fake title nicely sums up everything you need to know about the latest Kevin James comedy vehicle.
A full-length trailer has been released for Zookeeper, which features the former King of Queens actor doing what he does best (or, rather, what sells tickets): playing a nice guy who just wants to get the girl, but ends up foiling his own efforts in over-the-top comical fashion.
Zookeeper stars James as Griffin Keyes, a humble (what else) zookeeper who gets a second chance at marrying the girl of his dreams, Stephanie (Leslie Bibb, a.k.a. the reporter who jumps into bed with Tony Stark in Iron Man). The problem is that means he’d have to abandon his job of caring for the zoo’s furry inhabitants -- who, of course, can secretly talk, and decide to break their code of silence in order to help their favorite caretaker out.
The film also features Rosario Dawson in the role of Kate, Griffin’s beautiful coworker who (unlike Stephanie) likes him just the way he is. If you’re at all in suspense about which of these lovely ladies James’ character is going to end up with, then you’re clearly confused about the point of Zookeeper.

James does have a likable screen personality, but his movies always offer the same exact thing: an opportunity to watch the comedian pull off numerous pratfalls and physical comedy gags that are either a bit more adult or raunchier in nature (see: his Adam Sandler collaborations like Grown Ups) or something that the whole family can watch without the awkwardness (see: Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Zookeeper).
There are plenty of red flags in the Zookeeper trailer that suggest the movie could end up making for an annoying afternoon at the cinema with your kids -- especially if “realistic” CGI talking animals and blatant product placement (see: the T.G.I. Friday’s bit) are major pet peeves of yours. Hopefully this summer’s other kid-flick that pairs a comedic actor with animals (Mr. Popper’s Penguins) won’t have so much of that.
Zookeeper arrives in theaters this summer on July 8th.
