A new TV trailer for ‘Fright Night’ pokes fun at ‘Twilight’ and includes footage of David Tennant as a vampire hunter – but also suggests the remake may not be worth a 3D ticket price.

David Tennant in the Fright Night remake

The 2011 MTV Movie Awards aired last night -- and once again, the Twilight franchise reigned triumphant at the ceremony. Among the new goodies that aired during the show was a television trailer for the Fright Night remake, which promises to be the anti-Twilight in every sense of the term.

Fright Night features many of the same ingredients (teens, romance, handsome but deadly vampires) as author Stephenie Meyer’s creation, but very much combines them in a different and hard R-Rated manner.

The first Fright Night trailer introduced us to most of the important players in the film -- including protagonist Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) and evil blood-sucker Jerry Dandridge (Colin Farrell). However, that trailer failed to offer any footage of fan-favorite David Tennant as the illusionist/vampire hunter Peter Vincent. That problem is remedied in the new TV trailer, which also makes the former Doctor Who star look like a pretty bad-ass warrior in the remake.

On the less encouraging side of things: There’s good reason to be concerned that even though Fright Night is being released in “Real 3D,” it will suffer from murky color tones, due to it taking place primarily at night. As evidenced recently by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, poorly-lit settings and 3D visuals don’t make for such a hot mix.

Could that also prove to be the case with Fright Night? Watch the new TV trailer below and find out:

Fright Night director Craig Gillespie and co-star Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad, Kick-Ass) were recently talking up the horror-comedy remake, saying that the movie features much more traditional vampire-related gore/violence and hilariously foul-mouthed humor (much of it, courtesy of Plasse and Tennant) than the trailer(s) might lead you to believe. If nothing else, it at least appears as though Farrell’s turn as the wickedly ingenious Jerry should serve as additional evidence that he works better as a character actor than a leading man.

On the other hand: The non-R-Rated bits of humor in Fright Night that have been glimpsed so far (Twilight references, iPhone application jokes) come off too much like self-aware attempts to be “hip” and appeal to the teenage demographic. Combine that with concerns that the remake could go overboard on being a darker and more action-oriented take on its horror-comedy predecessor, and there’s no guarantee the final product won’t be just kind of a bloody mess. Finally, the film doesn’t seem worth watching in 3D, all things considered. It’s probably better to save that 3D ticket money for something like Transformers 3.

Working in the film’s favor is the involvement of screenwriter Marti Noxon, who also worked on Joss Whedon’s original Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series -- so we know she’s certainly capable of delivering a vampire tale that mixes sly humor with legitimately cool action. Plus, her being hired on to work with Gillespie again on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a good sign that both the director and studio heads approve of what Noxon did with Fright Night.

Fright Night hits theaters this summer on August 19th, 2011.
