An official trailer has been released for ‘Final Destination 5′, which once again finds a group of young people being stalked by Death after they survive a terrible accident.

By the time the fifth entry in a stalker horror franchise rolls around, the series has generally abandoned any notion of developing unnerving atmosphere or delivering genuinely shocking jump-scares – and instead just aims to up the ante in terms of creatively-contrived kills. Enter Final Destination 5.


An official trailer has been released for the fifth Final Destination flick, which promises to deliver exactly what you would expect: lesser-known actors and actresses being “stalked by Death” and murdered in a variety of bizarre and squirm-inducing manners.

Here is an all-too-familiar synopsis for Final Destination 5:

In this fifth installment, Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one man’s premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape Death’s sinister agenda.

TV stars like Emma Bell (The Walking Dead), Nick D’Agosto (Heroes), and Miles Fisher (Gossip Girl) serve as potential victims in Final Destination 5, which was scripted by Eric Heisserer (the Nightmare on Elm Street remake). So what does the non-corporeal representation of Death have in store this time?

This trailer does tease at a handful of genuinely unsettling setups and deadly set pieces in Final Destination 5 (that scene in the ophthalmologist’s office in particular). Plus, there thankfully isn’t really any in-your-face 3D gimmickry in the trailer – though the actual film will probably have a fair amount of that, seeing how Brian Pearson (Drive Angry, My Bloody Valentine) served as the director of photography.

However, there’s no real suspense in any of this footage; what little excitement there is comes from the promise of nameless and uninteresting characters getting the axe in some predictably elaborate but gruesome fashion. So, outside of gore hounds, few other moviegoers will likely have much fun watching this thing. Of course, if we’re being honest, no one but die-hard fans of the franchise are probably itching to see this pic anyway.

The fifth Final Destination movie wisely changed release dates, and will avoid having to open against either the Guillermo del Toro-produced scarefest Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark or the much-delayed Apollo 18. Depending on how well the fifth film does in theaters, Final Destination 6 could (or not) be right around the corner.

Final Destination 5 hits theaters this summer on August 12th.
